A MESSAGE TO ALL NEW YORKERS:
It’s Time for NYC’s “Pot Shop Photo OP Sheriff”, Anthony Miranda, to Resign!
While many Sheriff Departments in the State of New York and the communities they serve have realized the importance of recruiting and retaining the best qualified men and women to join their ranks, by investing and supporting their Deputies, New York City Sheriff Anthony has taken a different approach.
Rather than respecting the needs and concerns of NYC’s Deputy Sheriffs, as it relates to their safety and working conditions, Sheriff Anthony Miranda has spent the past two years establishing a consistent pattern of retaliating against his own workforce, punishing them and discipling them for advocating for their members.
Anthony Miranda has proven time and time again that he’ll go to any length to shutdown dissent just as vigorously as he crusades against illegal cannabis stores.
New Yorkers know very little about the “pot shop photo op” Sheriff, who rarely testifies about the operations of the Sheriff’s Department, which is under the authority of the Department of Finance. There are no Mayor’s Management Reports about the performance of his Sheriff’s Department. Oversight hearings or public testimony by the Sheriff are few and far between. As a result of this lack of oversight and transparency, Sheriff Anthony Miranda operates the Sheriff’s department like his own personal fiefdom.
ABOUT NYC DEPUTY SHERIFFS
NYC Deputy Sheriffs perform essential services on behalf thousands of New Yorkers every day.
The majority of their duties include:
- Discovery and seizure of property
- Cigarette Tax and License Enforcement
- Arrests
- Conduct Vehicle and Property Auctions
- Serving a variety of mandates, orders and decrees issued by various courts
Anthony Miranda’s Pattern of Retaliation & Mistreatment of NYC Deputy Sheriffs & the Impact on Public Safety:
FACTS:
- Punitive Disciplinary Charges and suspensions and transfers including trumped up charges against union officials.
- Shutting down protected union activities
- Forcing Deputies to go from traditional 4-day work weeks to five-day work weeks
- Workforce is already stretched thin with approximately 150 deputies in the entire city
- Sheriff wants overnight tour workers to work on Saturdays and focus exclusively on cannabis shutdowns on the weekends
- Sheriff made unilateral changes to the use of annual leave and vacation schedules
- He forced deputies returning from Line of Duty injuries to work 8-hour tours without their service weapons alongside deputies working 10-hour tours with their service weapons
- Deputies have been working without a contract since January 1, 2022 while the sheriff continues to make changes that affect the terms of their employment.
- 37 Deputies have left in the past two years because of low morale and only 26 have been on boarded
- There is only one full time Instructor to qualify existing deputies and new deputies for their firearms qualifications twice a year
- Other workers from other agencies being pulled in without proper training
- Any Deputy who tries to do things safely is disciplined or transferred
- Seized items- cannabis, alcohol, E-Bikes all being stored unsafely in one warehouse in Queens.
- Operation Padlock- 224 stores allegedly pad locked as of May 29th. However, as per OATH- 95 store owners have been found guilty, 48 cases were dismissed and 21 are awaiting decisions.
- The bottom line is that demonizing his workforce and stretching his workforce so thin has a major impact on the deputies’ ability to carry out all the other essential services to the public- warrants for child support, evictions, seizures of illegal items and much more
- All throughout his career in law enforcement he rallied against the very abusive management practices that have now become a hallmark of his tenure as sheriff.
- NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda refuses to sign off on pistol license inquiry responses aka ‘good guy letters’ and the issuance of “Retired” ID card for retirees.
- NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda demonized deputies for whistle blowing on workplace hazards that were substantiated by NYS Public Employee Safety & Health (PESH).
